Project Overview
Building Bridge to Accessible Fitness: Empowering Personal Trainers and Individuals with Disabilities through Education, Community, and AI-Driven Coaching
Background
EU Disability Strategy 2021-2030: This strategy focuses on ensuring full participation in society for persons with disabilities, aligning with the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). It emphasizes the need for accessibility in all aspects of life, including physical activity and sports.
Acknowledging the EU's focus on mental health, as seen in the "European Framework for Action on Mental Health and Well-being" Bridge4Fitness incorporates psychological support training for trainers.
This aspect is crucial, as research indicates that people with disabilities may face unique mental health challenges, and supportive fitness environments can play a vital role in addressing these.
Reports from the European Disability Forum (EDF) highlight communication barriers faced by people with disabilities in various settings, including sports and fitness. Bridge4Fitness intends to improve communication skills among trainers, making fitness more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their abilities.
Bridging the gap requires a multi-pronged approach:
_ Building capacity among fitness professionals: Equipping them with knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively train individuals with diverse disabilities.
_ Fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing: Creating a supportive ecosystem where professionals, individuals with disabilities, and stakeholders can connect, learn from each other, and advocate for inclusive practices.
_ Leveraging technology: Utilizing AI-powered tools to personalize training, offer virtual support, and address accessibility challenges.
The Bridge4Fitness project aims to contribute to these goals by:
_ Developing and delivering a comprehensive online certification course and in-person workshops for fitness professionals, focusing on inclusive training strategies and disability awareness.
_ Building a vibrant online platform for connecting diverse stakeholders, facilitating knowledge exchange, and promoting inclusive practices within the fitness community.
_ Implementing an AI-powered training platform that personalizes coaching for individuals with disabilities, empowering them to achieve their fitness goals.
The project draws inspiration from successful initiatives across the EU and beyond, including:
_ Fit for All (Ireland): Promotes inclusive fitness through training and resources for professionals.
_ Inclusive Fitness Initiative (UK): Develops and shares resources for inclusive training and facility design.
